Tiles/ Mosaics/ Mixed Media Works
London, UK
For over 30 years artist Stephen Wright has worked extensively as an artist and designer. Initially he began in printed textiles, then set up his own design company, and for the last decade has worked as an artist. Wright graduated in 1978 from Liverpool Polytechnic with a degree in printed textiles and then in 1980 an MA in printed textiles at Manchester University.
Wright increasingly became disillusioned with the design world and wanted to start all over again. After seeing a series of programs on television in 1998 about outsider art, he began working on a life project the ‘house of dreams museum’ within his home and garden in East Dulwich. Every surface inside and outside has been covered with found objects, such as false teeth, old disabled dolls, bottle tops and wigs. These are included together with his hand-written memory boards which recall important events in his life.
In 2024 Stephen Wright had a solo exhibition, “Walking Round My Head” in the galleries at the Magic Gardens Museum. Tiles were created in September 2024 at the Magic Gardens Studio by Stephen Wright and his husband Michael Vaughan with Isaiah and PMG Executive Director Emily Smith. Isaiah asked Stephen to create tiles that could then be installed in the sculpture garden at the Museum. The tiles were installed by the preservation team in October 2024.
