Can craft be an effective antidote against the monotony overtaking the material world? Mexican handcraft, from ceramics, to weaving, to the making of mezcal, is often thought of as a rudimentary artform. However, when we examine Mexican artisanship, a complex story emerges that is shaped by limitless variation of materials and processes.

For example, an Espadin Agave (the species from which most commercially available mezcal is made) is far from a simple plant. It is the bat which pollinated the flower, the earth in which it grew, the multi-year exposure to the elements, and the influences of the plant’s immediate neighbors, such as corn, chili pepper, zucchini, or other agaves. These factors drastically impact the final product, all before fermentation and distillation even begin.

Craft has the potential to reveal the unique fingerprints of the processes and the people behind it. With Material Mexico we will dive into Mexican craft and give it a chance to speak about its origins, scars, and potential.

Material Mexico will feature a casual conversation lead by guest speaker Salvador Periban, who will share one-of-a kind mezcal samples. Each guest will receive a handblown mezcal copita from Studio Xaquixe in Oaxaca, Mexico to take home. Additional mezcal will be provided by Philadelphia’s own Dock-Street Spirits. Light refreshments will be provided by South Philly Barbacoa.

Folk art tours highlighting Mexican artworks installed throughout Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens will also be held during the event. Both Spanish and English-speaking guides will be available.
