The Lorenzo Family
Paintings
Guerrero, Mexico
The Lorenzo Family is a prominent, long-standing family of painters from Guerrero, Mexico.
The family is headed by Lucas Lorenzo, the originator of this painting tradition. His four sons: Aureliano, Jesus, Nicolas, and Santiago, and his daughters Carlota, Lizbeth, and Socorro are painters as well. His grandson Fernando also carries on the tradition and is the driving force behind their business.
Using common materials such as acrylic paint on masonite, each member of the family incorporates their own hand in the artwork, either by outlining the initial drawing, applying color, or adoring each piece with customary Mexican patterns. Many of their works feature jaguars, skeletons, luchadors, mermaids, and other popular characters in Mexican culture.
PMG’s founding artist, Isaiah Zagar, has been collaborating with the Lorenzo family for several years. Like many of his other folk art partners, he will give them drawings to translate into their signature painting style. The staff at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens continues this connection with the Lorenzo Family. You can also check out our gift shop to view and purchase more of their art!
