Matty Geez: You Never Lived in the Desert
On View: September 4 – November 8, 2020
Opening Reception: Friday, September 11, 2020; 6:00 – 9:00 PM
Philadelphia artist Matty Geez creates desert-like environments of bright and flamboyant cacti by using accessible materials like wood skewers and painted foam. His scenes are inspired by the set design of ‘80s and ‘90s “B” science-fiction film and TV, mixed with his focus on queer visibility. The materials Geez uses to build these works plays with soft versus sharp, approachable versus guarded, and masculine versus feminine. These concepts blend together to challenge the binary of stereotypical gender identities. Using bursts of color, texture, gradient, and patterning, Geez’s desert-scapes invite viewers who may not feel represented in a typical museum environment to feel welcomed in a unique and nonconforming setting.
Matty Geez is celebrated within the Philadelphia art scene and has exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions, including Arch Enemy Arts, the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and the Philadelphia Airport. In 2018, he was selected by Lancaster City Public Art Program to construct a large installation at the city’s Amtrak station. Geez believes in the importance of collaboration and has worked with different ceramicists to make homes for his cactus creations.
Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and Matty Geez invite you to experience You Never Lived in the Desert during a pay-what-you-wish opening reception on Friday, September 11, 2020, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.
