On View: May 3 – July 7, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, May 10, 2019; 6:00 – 9:00 PM

For decades, Isaiah Zagar has created artwork that chronicles his life, his influences, and his community. While

known best for his mosaic work, his fluid and energetic artistic practice is expressed in many mediums. He Lives a Painted Life focuses on an extensive portfolio of colorful paintings that celebrate Zagar’s wide arc as an artist and his distinctive spot in Philadelphia and the greater art world.

Zagar’s paintings are made spontaneously and filled with materials that were immediately available to him. These materials layer his canvases with both personal and symbolic meaning, which demonstrates his passion for combining created and found objects.

All of his paintings have a story: personal, emotional, and deeply rooted in his daily life. While some stories are clearly represented, others remain abstract. The collection of works in this exhibition reflects Zagar’s colorful and painted life.
