September 2008
This newsletter brings the first installment of a new section called 'Ask Isaiah'. Here at the Magic Gardens, we always get interesting questions that sometimes only Isaiah can answer. We will soon be adding an Ask Isaiah Box at the Gardens for questions, but questions can also be submitted by email (send to info@phillymagicgardens.org). Each month we will choose a question for the newsletter, and include Isaiah's response.
This month's question:
"Where is the very first tile that you laid in the Magic Gardens?"
Isaiah: "Well...I don't remember." |

Dear Friends,
As summer comes to a close and leaves begin to fall, the Magic Gardens will remain open 7 days a week from 11am to 6pm. We are very excited to present our 2008 Artists in Residence, Scrap Performance Group. Scrap will transform the Magic Gardens with its premier of TIDE during the Philly Fringe Festival. Just a few weeks later, Isaiah will lead the creation of a new mural on the front of the newly renovated CHI Movement Arts Center, home of the Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers. We invite you to take part in this exciting workshop as we make over the façade of this South Philadelphia non-profit dance company.
Read on for more information regarding these exciting events, and to find a special offer at the end of this letter!
Scrap Performance Group Presents the Premier of Their Latest Work, TIDE
Philadelphia Fringe Festival
September 10 - 14, at 8pm in the Magic Gardens
Tickets: www.livearts-fringe.org / 215.413.9006
Founded in 1994, Scrap transforms dance from art to inquiry, creating fierce dance theater that provokes audience members to question critical social issues. Scrap moves dance into new, dynamic genres by integrating film, light, sound, and environment with blazing physicality and edgy choreography. Dance Magazine has described Scrap as "a wonderful collision of rapture, capture, and trap - hot themes explored in a postmodern style."
TIDE is a new dance-based theater production created by the directors of Scrap Performance Group, Myra Bazell and Madison Cario. With choreography by Bazell and the aural and visual illuminations of Cario, TIDE emerges from the mosaic labyrinth of the Magic Gardens as a moving conversation. TIDE will escort its audience throughout the emotions of celebrated beauty, tragic ecological loss and the precarious dance between hope and lamentation, asking the question, How can we be sane when we are destroying that which sustains us?
TIDE was co-created with dance artists Katharine Livingston (founding member of Scrap), Lindsay Browning, Marie Brown, Shannon Murphy, Sara Yassky and John Luna.

Isaiah's September Workshop at the CHI Movement Arts Center (www.kunyanglin.org)
After visiting Kun-Yang Lin and his dancers at their new studio in South Philly, Isaiah has agreed to take on the building's front exterior as the project of his workshop on September 20th and 21st. Artistic director of this non-profit professional dance company, Kun-Yang Lin, hopes that their new South Philly home at 1316-1320 South 9th Street will enable them to engage in the community, "spreading [their] love of art and [their] belief in its power to transform lives and bring people together." This space serves as the site of rehearsals, dance classes and workshops for children, adults and professional dancers.
To celebrate the beautiful new facade, there will be an Open House at CHI Movement Arts Center on Sunday, September 21 at 4:00pm. The celebration will include performances by Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers and Flamenco del Encuentro! The suggested donation is $10. Please visit www.kunyanglin.org or call 267.687.3739 for more information.
Help Isaiah create a brand-new mural on the CHI Movement Arts Center façade on 9th Street between Wharton and Reed Streets. In one art-packed weekend, you will learn Isaiah's entire method from breaking tile to coloring grout, while contributing to Philly's public art. Visit our Website for more information.
'In A Dream' Showing at the Trocadero
