Ashanté Kindle and Khari Turner explore themes of culture and generational lineage through personal narratives in their dynamic textural paintings.

Kindle uses her abstract paintings as a form of self-healing. She is driven by the recall of memories and a desire to celebrate the history and beauty of Blackness. Through the use of meticulous mark-making, Kindle connects to her body, emotions, and Black hair.

Turner connects images of Black people coming of age to Black history through figure paintings. He mixes his paint with water samples collected from oceans, lakes, and rivers that have historical or personal connections to Black history. The cracked texture created by this mixture links history to contemporary culture.

Together, the works of Kindle and Turner intertwine the past and present through abstraction and figurative works.
