The ancient Greeks believed the goddess Athena bestowed humanity with the art of embroidery. Divine or not, embroidery is a significant element of folk-art traditions around the globe, from the intricate geometric patterns of Pakistan to the lush floral motifs of Peru. As a form of self-expression, contemporary embroidery has few limitations.
In celebration of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens’ current exhibition Allá Abajo/ Down Below: A Reaction to Our Times by Ornella Ridone – a collection of contemporary hand-embroidered textiles which explore the complex relationship between Mexico and the United States — we invite you to create an original piece of embroidery to take home. All skill levels and ages are welcome (we will be using safety needles, so have no fear).
Ornella Ridone is the first recipient of the Julia Zagar Residency for Women Artists. Learn more about the Zagars’ life-long love of folk art and how it influenced Isaiah Zagar’s creation of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens on a family-friendly tour at 1:00 or 2:30.
PECO Family Jams are PMG’s one-of-a-kind, family-oriented programs, featured every second Sunday of the month between NOON and 4:00 PM. All PECO Family Jams workshops and activities are FREE with admission.
