Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is filled with hundreds of colorful folk art objects from all over Mexico. Today, we will be exploring a folk tradition that thrives along the Mexico-US border: cascarones, colorful eggshells filled with confetti, glitter, or small toys. Historically made in Mexico during Carnaval season when young people flirtatiously cracked them over each other’s heads as symbols of affection and good luck, cascarones have become popular during weddings, birthdays, Christmas, and New Year’s celebrations. They might be decorated as simply as Easter eggs or as elaborately as small, impermanent works of art.

We are joined by teaching artist Marta Sanchez who has been hosting annual cascarones making-and-breaking events in Philadelphia for over 30 years in support of HIV programs. Next spring, she will attempt to set the world’s record for largest group cascarones cracking. Help us make cascarones for the 2023 event and for your own celebrations at home.

Learn more about the folk art at PMG during our special basement tours at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m.

A limited amount of FREE tickets are available to visit PMG during this PECO Family Jams event. Reserve your free tickets here.

PECO Family Jams are PMG’s one-of-a-kind, family-oriented programs, featured every second Sunday of the month between NOON and 4:00 PM.
