Join us for a special discussion on Blood, Sweat, and Tears, artist Russell Craig’s provocative exhibition currently on view in PMG’s galleries.

Craig’s artistic style and stirring imagery were developed during his seven-year incarceration. With little art materials available to him, he utilized his court papers to make his canvas. He continues to create art intentionally using unconventional materials, such as cigarette cartons and cow’s blood, to offer commentary on social issues and to force viewers to look closer at each piece. Whether looking at the work as a whole or analyzing the details, his art offers a unique perspective to a complex story and provide an opportunity to unify those who have struggled with trauma and advocate for positive change within our communities.

Craig will be joined by Dr. Nicole Fleetwood, author, curator, and professor at Rutgers University. Fleetwood lectures nationally on the intersections of art and mass incarceration. Most recently, she collaborated with Aperture Foundation on Prison Nation—an exhibition of prison photography, a special issue of the magazine, and a six-part public engagement series. She is currently completing her third book, Marking Time: Prison Art and Public Culture, a study of visual art in the era of mass incarceration.

Fleetwood will host a discussion with Craig about his work in Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and the many topics covered in the show. The discussion will be followed by a walk-through of the exhibition with Craig.

Admission is free, but reservations are required. We recommend reserving your spot early, as space is limited.
