Tile & Grout Services

Pre-visit Lecture
This Powerpoint lecture and/or hands-on activity will be given by PMG's Education and Outreach Manager at your school or organization. The presentation introduces students to the art of Isaiah Zagar, visionary art environments, and gives them insight into what they will see on their upcoming visit. Pre-visit hands-on activities can include doily-tile construction, paper mosaic projects, and book-making relating to PMG, and can be tailored to the school's facilities and resources.

Teaching Artist Mini-Lessons
PMG's Teaching Artist will visit your school or organization to provide pottery-drive and mural consultation, design generation and development, a viewing of Monumental Mosaics: The Isaiah Zagar Method, and introductory mosaic sessions.

PMG Site Tour and Q & A with Isaiah Zagar

Once participants have been introduced to visionary art environments and mosaic murals, they visit Philadelphia's Magic Gardens to view the shimmering mosaic labyrinth first-hand. The hour-long site tour of the gardens and a nearby mosaic property is followed by a Q & A session with the creator of PMG, Isaiah Zagar. In this half-hour session, visitors are encouraged to ask Zagar questions about his process, personal history, and inspirations, in addition to specific questions related to the generation of their own mural.

Zagar Mosaic Method Instruction
Up to 25 students per instructor

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens offers mosaic mural workshops at your school, organization or garden taught by trained PMG Teaching Artists. Lessons guide students from conception to completion of their own Zagar-inspired mosaic mural. Topics covered include: mural design development, various tile-making techniques, reverse glass painting, preparing and using appropriate materials, cutting mirror, and using adhesives and grout.

The organization must provide the materials used in the mural. A complete list of Zagar's preferred materials and mural time line is available upon request. Because of the use of sharp materials, this program is recommended for participants that are at least 12 years old. Projects can be modified to work with younger audiences with supplemental supervision. For more information, please email the Tile & Grout Program Coordinator, Trish Metzner-Lynch at pmetzner@phillymagicgardens.org.
