Artists in Residence

In August of 2008, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens welcomed our first Artists in Residence, Scrap Performance Group (www.scrap-performance.org). Founded in 1994, Scrap transforms dance from art to inquiry, creating fierce dance theatre that provokes audience members to question critical social issues. Scrap moves dance into new, dynamic genres by integrating film, light, sound, and environment with blazing physicality and edgy choreography.

Scrap uses non-traditional performance spaces ranging from historical Philadelphia landmarks to abandoned warehouses, churches, museums and outdoor spaces. This summer, Scrap added Philadelphia's Magic Gardens to its list of non-traditional venues with the Fringe Festival premier of TIDE, a new dance-based theatre production.

Created by the directors of Scrap Performance Group, Myra Bazell and Madison Cario, TIDE asks the question, how can we be sane when we are destroying that which sustains us? Emerging from the mosaic labyrinth of the Magic Gardens, TIDE escorts its audience through the emotions of celebrated beauty, tragic ecological loss and the precarious dance between hope and lamentation. TIDE is being co-created with dance artists Katharine Livingston (founding member of Scrap), Lindsay Browning, Marie Brown, Shannon Murphy, Sara Yassky and John Luna.

Scrap Performance Group unveiled TIDE at 2008's Philadelphia Fringe Festival on September 10-14. Join our mailing list to hear about future performances by Scrap Performance Group, or email info@phillymagicgardens.org for more information.
